They're dumb as individuals, but when thousands of them need caring for, SimCity balloons into a dazzlingly complex and addictive management game, and it's all beautifully rendered in three-dimensional space, scaling all the way down to blades of grass. They like parks, schools, and city services. They hate crime, unemployment, pollution (called “germs” for some reason), high taxes, and death. The Sims themselves aren't exceptional as individuals-they live out their ant-farm lives with short memories and clockwork brains, behaving like small children motivated only by immediate desires and immediate discomfort. It shifts the simulation from abstract data-crunching to the visible, real-time interactions of thousands of individual Sims, cars, residences, businesses, factories, and everything else you might find in a city. SimCity does that too, but with a drastically different method. Will Wright's 1989 original and every Maxis-developed SimCity that came after are about the same thing: building and simulating cities. SimCity is the series' greatest technical achievement. After over a week of building, smashing, and rewiring SimCity's machines to figure out how they work, they still surprise me. They churn through endless feedback loops, feeding Sims into swirling cause and effect eddies that produce money, goods, happiness, and growth. Otherwise all normal rules apply.At their greatest scale, SimCity's cities are self-powering machines with hundreds of thousands of moving parts. There is 1 exclusive regional Epic Building for each region that has a 1 in 13 chance to appear regardless of the specialization. To do an Epic Project in a region, you must have a fully upgraded Residential Zone. After an Epic Project has finished, you must wait 24 hours before being able to do another one. The tier you reached will not affect the look of the Epic Building. You can then click on it to unveil your Epic Building. Once the 24 hours is up or you have reached 200 Epic Points, the Epic Project will end and, depending on the tier you reached, your building will be covered in that type of scaffolding. Cheetah, 200 Epic Points, generates Cheetah Speed-Up Token parts.Llama, 100 Epic Points, generates Llama Speed-Up Token parts.Turtle, 40 Epic Points, generates Turtle Speed-Up Token parts.There are 3 different tiers an Epic Building can reach. Each building gives between 1-6 Epic Points.Įpic Points are how you progress in the Epic Project.
These offers will ask for a random quantity of an item (excluding special and OMEGA items) in exchange for Epic Points. Depending on the specialization you choose, some buildings from that specialization will have epic offers appear on them. In this time period, all advisor offers go away and do not reappear until the the project is over. After that, it will cost an increasing amount of Simoleons for that specialization.ĭuring an Epic Project, the building will be covered in an epic scaffolding. To start an Epic Project for the first time in a specific specialization, it will cost 1,000 Simoleons. You can also change the specialization of the Epic Project for the same price as the building. The price will reset after the Epic Project.
The price will increase by 120 Simoleons and for the first 12 and then continue by 80 Simoleons after that. After an epic hat appears, you can choose to transfer the hat to a different fully upgraded residential zone for Simoleons. Those specializations are: Education, Transportation, Beach, Entertainment, Mountain, Gambling, and Landmarks. In order for a hat to appear, the residential zone must be covered by a specialization that supports Epic Buildings. When you unlock the ability to do Epic Projects, a golden contruction hat with wings will appear on a fully upgraded residential zone. Once the Department of Epic Projects is built, you unlock Turtle Speed-Up Tokens.

The Department is unlocked at level 16 and is free to build from the government service tab. To start an Epic Project, you must have built the Department of Epic Projects and be minimum level 24. There are 89 Epic Buildings with 5 of them being Regional Epic Buildings. Epic Buildings hold 31% more population (2,411 instead of 1,836) and generate Speed-Up Token parts. Epic Projects are a special 24 hour project to convert a regular fully upgraded residential zone into an Epic Building.
